EPL Legends Return to former Squads in FA Cup 3rd Round

The FA Cup 3rd round matches went down this past weekend with some fun results. Liverpool started on Friday taking on Oldham Athletic. Andy Carroll has been struggling lately and with Suarez banned, the Reds needed him to come through. Oldham opened scoring only 28 minutes in. two minutes later, top form Craig Bellamy tucked on away. On the edge of half time, Legend Steven Gerrard put in the penalty kick. After halftime, Shelvey, Carroll and Stuart Downing scored, ending 5-1. Now somehow Downing was still upset because only days later, he was arrested for allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend.
On Saturday, Tottenham beat Cheltenham Town 3-0 with goals from Defoe, Pavlyuchenko and Dos Santos. Defoe has been in great form lately so it has been expected that scored. Pavlyuchenko is a great striker and its surprising he is really only a back up striker for the Spurs. He is now showing either he needs for first team time or trying to get other clubs to make an offer for him. Dos Santos is another player who barely plays and is normally warming up the bench. It’s good for him that he scored because he is also showing when he gets playing time, he delivers.
Other scores included:
Newcastle 2-1 Blackburn
Birmingham City 0-0 Wolves
Dagenham & Redbridge 0-0 Millwall
FleetwoodTown 1-5 Blackpool
Sheffield United 3-1 Salisbury City

Sunday showed us the biggest game of the round if not of the entire tournament. Manchester City hosting bitter rivals Manchester United. Everyone was expecting City to dominate United like they did last time, 6-1. It started with United fans getting a great surprise to see Paul Scholes training before the game. Yes, this was the unannounced return from retirement for the Man Utd legend. United went up 3-0 the first half with two goals from Wayne Rooney and one from Danny Welbeck. Vincent Kompany got a red card which at first was questionable because he didn’t actually make much contact and Nani didn’t hit the ground, but it was the intent the he had. It was a two footed tackle with studs up. Definitely a red card in my book. City came back with two goals and Scholes came on for 30 minutes. He had 71 passes with 97.2% pass completion. Just might have been the right decision to bring him back to settle United’s midfield problems. Scholes came back sporting number 22, as his 18 was given to Ashley Young.

Chelsea had a nice 4-0 win over Portsmouth with goals from Mata, two from Ramires and a late one from the unsettled mid, Lampard. Sheffield Wednesday had a 1-0 win over West Ham and Petersborough United losing to Sunderland 0-2.

On Monday, Arsenal took on Leeds United which marked the waited return of Thierry Henry to
his beloved Arsenal. The match was pretty slow being 0-0 for majority of the time. Henry came on in the 68th minute. He got the ball on three occasions and after being on the field for 10
minutes, he scored. Talk about a dream return for the French international. He scored his 12th goal against Leeds in 12 appearances against them with 12 minutes left, wearing his new number 12 jersey. The final score was 1-0 and the legend won it for the London reds. Of course it wasn't their best lineup, but Arsenal should have played much better. Henry provided the spark and it'll be great to see how he plays the rest of his loan. Personally, I got the chills when he scored. I can't wait to see what he and Robin Van Persie will do once re-united.

There is news of some other former EPL players making their return, like David Beckham with a possible return to the English League. Robbie Keane is close to signing a short term loan with Aston Villa. And I'm sure you all already know, but Landon Donovan is back on another loan with Everton.

How do you guys think these returning players will perform, and would you like to see any other players return to their former clubs?
