G. Neville Retires

Today, ends the group once called Fergie’s Fledglings as Gary Neville, legendary Manchester United defender retires. Fergie’s Fledglings refers to the United squad which was filled with youth. Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville and Gary Neville were these “kids”. Beckham, Butt and Phil Neville all moved on from United. Beckham made several transfers, first to Real Madrid then to L.A. Galaxy with a few loans to AC Milan. Nicky Butt moved to Newcastle United and had a loan to Birmingham, but now plays for South China. Phil Neville transferred to Everton in 2005 and has been playing for them since, and obviously Giggs and Scholes both still play for United. Gary is the first of this youth squad to end his football career. He has been very loyal to the club just like Giggs and Scholes and the trio have had a great run, but now it’s down to the duo of United. Gary has played for united all his life, starting with the Youth Squad in ’91, and moving up a year later to the First Team. It isn’t very common when you get a few players like these all on one team, and it is very hard to keep them together. These Beatles were broken up in 2003 with the departure of Beckham. Then Nicky Butt and then Phil Neville, but they all still played, until today. Gary didn’t have a starting position, but he contributed a lot of leadership on and off the pitch. There has been word of Gary wanting to become a manager, but nothing is certain yet. One thing is certain, Gary Neville will be missed.
