Beckham
scores CCL's 1000th goal in 5-2 Victory over Metpán. (Video Highlights)
LA
Galaxy took on Metpán, Thursday night in a CONCACAF Champions League
match up in front on 10,574 fans at the Home Depot Center. The team
visiting the states from El Salvador took the early lead after only
just 17 minutes through Nicolas Munoz. It didn't take the Galaxy long
to tun things around as two of David Beckham's crosses were converted
3 and 5 minutes later. In the 20th
minute, Jose Alvarado put in an own goal for DB's cross. Two minutes
later, Becks sent in a similar cross and Robbie Keane finished it off
with a downwards header and made it 2-1. With play going back and
fourth neither side could net another, at least until the Galaxy won
a corner right before halftime. Beckham curled one in and as
goalkeeper Fidel Mondragón tried to punch the shot out, it slipped
off his fist into the side netting and LA were up 3-1heading in the
locker rooms. A bit slower start to the second half, but in the 70th
minute, Robbie Keane was sent off. Now the exact reason of the Red
Card was unclear, but after being tripped right outside of the box,
Keane jumped up and was warned with a yellow card. After continuing
his protest and asking to be subbed off, Mexican referee Alfredo
Peñaloza pulled the red card. I'm not exactly on the ref's side
here. A yellow card would have been enough and it was a very
unnecessary call. This didn't stop the Galaxy from widening the gap.
Vitor Gomes Pereira Junior Juninho (or just Juninho for short) made
it 4-1 with a easy tap-in in the 82nd
minute. Nicolas Munoz netted a second after being awarded a penalty
making it 4-2. Juninho topped it off with another goal in stoppage
time bringing the final score to be 5-2.
LA
Galaxy (1-0-0) top group five of the CCL with Metpán (1-1-0) in
second and Puerto Rico Islanders (0-1-0) in third. Beckham's goal
ended up being the 1000th
goal scored in CCL history which is quite the prize aside from
winning the match.
(Win-Loss-Draw)
TFIU's
Man of the Match goes to David Beckham. He set up an own goal in
benefit of Galaxy, sent in the assist to Robbie Keane and scored from
the corner, which ended up being a landmark goal. It was definitely
his night.
